Set in the picturesque Pioneer Park in the centre of Mount Helena the Festival nestles beneath shady trees and with a winter creek trickling through. The location provides a beautiful backdrop to the Festival and your special day out.
The Mount Helena ratepayers have been running a community festival since 2009 – The Whim Festival. In 2018 we added the Hills Billy Cart Festival and a retro theme which has proven to be hugely popular and it has attracted crowds from far and wide. Created by volunteers, driven by community spirit and with proceeds returning to the community the event has morphed into the Mount Helena Classic which is rapidly gaining recognition across WA.
The event is free for visitors and is made possible only by the great sponsorship which we receive and the assistance of our volunteers.
The Festival component complements the Billy Cart competition and has an unashamedly retro feel to it. This year the theme is “the 20’s are here again” so flappers and dappers come along and see if you can win a spot prize. A great period dress up opportunity for parents and kids and an opportunity to have some photos in a period setting to carry the memories for years to come.
We also provide vintage clothing and period backdrop to create a memorable vintage photo shoot for you and the kids. Get into the flavor of things and come along in your flat hat, dicky bow tie and braces, Ladies a nice 20’s hat and parasol should be the minimum…live wild!
The Turn Back Time section has such kids favourites as a coconut shy, bean bag throws, vintage toys, pedal car / Scooter/ Trikes / balance bike event, vintage photo shoots for the littlies in front of a fairy tale castle etcetera.. We can accept no complaints from parents or grandparents regarding the voracious little monsters appetite to drain your pockets for ever more coconuts. It is important to mention to Homestyle Salads who sponsor the coconuts for us.
Static displays of old cars, prams, bicycles, pedal cars as well as some vintage stalls with pre-loved treasures for sale.
Local Community organisations aplenty will be there and reflecting our glorious lifestyle in the Hills. If the sporting groups try to sell you a raffle ticket then do not be offended. There are no entry fees and it is a unique opportunity for our community groups to raise much needed funds. A massive hamper prize from the Mount Helena Residents and Ratepayers Association will be up for grabs.
Since its inception the Festival has always been noted for its great local musicians and 2020 will be no different, a full musical program throughout the day.
A wide variety of food options and coffee aplenty together with wine tasting available from local wineries.
The Photography Exhibition will be open to all ages with a range of prizes on offer. The theme this year is yet to be announced along with details on how to enter which will be updated later in the year.
This is an inclusive, environmentally friendly event and we look forward to welcoming you to the natural setting of Pioneer Park in Mount Helena on Sunday, October 25th 2020 to experience a slice of nostalgia. You will not be sorry if you decide to attend – our feedback surveys have been overwhelming in their praise for the event. See you there!
